SCARABEUS
Description: Acrylic on canvas
Dimensions: 150 x 180 cm
This piece of work is a pure ‘coincidence’. I was supposed to attend an art fair in London,
where the smallest allowed canvas size was 150 cm x 180 cm. Which meant painting on the
largest-ever canvas in my life, and I said yes! Without a doubt.
That was almost 3 years ago, and at that time, my personal and professional life did not allow me to attend the fair. The canvas staid unused, abandoned in my home, for nearly two
years.
One nice sunny afternoon I decided to give it a start. My mother who is very romantic at heart, saw in the first strokes: a pond with ducks. There isnt anything I would not do for my mother, I was jokingly thinking to myself, but the vision of the painting took on a life of its own.
It is a common custom with me that I never plan. I let myself to get carried away with the strokes, dots and colours, and in several weeks I could see the Scarabeus vision, imprinting itself on the canvas. All of this unraveled in the open space of the garden, admits the grass, surrounded by high trees, in the highest possible state of creative bliss.
During the process, the painting was continuously visited by different insects and bugs, and
when it was drying out during the night, our cats walked on it, adding their own addition to
my very precise circles.
Scarabeus is a strong symbol for me. It is a connection to Egypt, that I feel quite
strongly around me, ever since my early childhood. I'm thankful for it to come to me in this
way.
Replica: Authored Reproduction – digital print on canvas – Using high-quality print, I am creating more believable replicas by adding my paints to shade and to contrast the picture. On the replica, you will find parts with real paint, and that way the copy looks more authentic so in the end it has personality and it is more personal to you.
